Those Magnificent Men
What does he make of it, William Blake,
looking up, seeing an aeroplane crossing the sky?
Huge and yet tiny, people inside it,
like a slow arrow forging the clouds,
silvering into the sun.
Does he, heart bursting, feel joy at
man’s easy accession to space?
Bewilderment, watching us walk on the moon
while half the world starves?
Does he fear for the safety of angels?
Leonardo da Vinci, too, is astounded
though not at all fazed by the aeroplane’s grace,
nor does ethics confuse his resolve.
He snatches his cloak – come on, let’s go,
I need to see this machine on the ground.
