Peonies
Marauding ants make their pregnancies
Unbeautiful, dragging their
Menacing slicks across the unborn.
Their claret blooms become too large
And gregarious. Within days the high stalks
Dip their fishing rods, the petals
Fall and scatter into pools of blood.
I wish them to be upright,
Smart survivors, lingering with
The marigold and rose who stray
Devoutly into equinox.
Their failures disappoint, but when
Their brittle straw lies down
Across the path, I think
To let them carry on, and not
To make those wild and thinning
Scalps of women leap into
The light. Next time I shall expect
Much less of them, relish instead,
Their fearless rampaging,
Boisterous brevity and crimson gold.
