Sundays
Exchanging news,
old men gathered outside the church,
part of another culture
another time.
His people, not mine.
We came back to his homeland
year after year, to return
to the old house where she ruled in chaos
ritualised by ripening fruit.
We would go down to the beach
where we made haystacks of fish shells
sticky with sand.
She gathered marble shells
luminous with brine.
