Why the sea
would recall Michelangelo
is anyone’s guess but the way
it chips, bites, clawhammers
cliffs in a doomed attempt
at definition’s a striking
reminder of those carved slaves’
aborted escape from white
Carrara chains. Never done
with its continuous gnawing
at chalk, the rain sends the hotel
we stayed in for the Storm-Drain
Manufacturers’ Conference,
teetering over the edge for
non-payment of rent. Look,
I’ve spotted the head-board that
witnessed our first tossing
and turning nights away from
respective husbands and wives:
we watch it dredged into drift-
wood washed like us onto shores
of some notional coast where
every beach is thick with flotsam
and jetsam, stuff thrown over
when the sea muscled in on us
like a landlord reviewing
his crumbling leasehold properties.
