Camelia
Pure waxen blossoms
wild in Himalayan clime
two hundred years
before Christ came,
supplied a beverage
fit for noblemen
that centuries later
common men called tea.
Camelias thrive
in luxury beds at Kew
and even sheltered gardens
yield a modest few.
But those who have romantic hearts
recall the ivory blooms
that Violetta loved
and Verdi with exquisite skill
composed an Opera.
She breathed their perfume
in her happier days
and when she died
her waxen cheeks
bore their resemblance.
