Environments
At times these rooms of mine appear to spurn me,
turn a blank face, not so much surly as disinterested
like a waiter with troubles on his mind
pictures turn blank, keys gape across the olivetti,
even the scattered books are locked in privacy.
The gas fire hisses mockingly when the Vivaldi’s done.
All one can do is let them brood;
there is no bargaining with the inanimate,
environments are as headstrong as people.
