Migrating Hoopers
Their necks are a forest of trumpets.
These tough, unpretty birds
will rest an hour on the pond.
Dredging the recent past,
not even their silhouettes recall
reptile ancestors. The meeting
looks martial. Fanfares acknowledge
a triumph in progress, how all
have pressed on according to plan.
Or ballerinas wading in rubber boots
refuse to linger, won't languish,
melt in anguish among tulle,
then becoming ice floes on a lake
unlocked, so palely blue
you'd think it white. Icebergs
are burning in the sky: a scent
of water penetrates your spirit.
And then the hoopers rise,
wishbone formation aiming north.
