Alarm
Pricked from your half-sleep by a qualm
You catch at a faint plaintive wail, a cat:
But scratching the night that repeated note
Is an electronic cry, a car-alarm.
Somewhere a twitch, a contact and it calls,
Steadily taps the mind as below language
It demands, lifts the street with one message
I am, I am, the cry of the mad on wards.
You lie wired into labyrinthine minds,
Hours of intricate R and D, of sketches,
Programmes, men micro-welding, and of tests
Stealing towards the trapped instinct, refined
And planted in the metal which, unsettled,
Calls from beyond life as one possessed.
