Underneath Are the Everlasting Arms
On the litany of victims
I find a woman my age
and write her name on a white card
tied to a white wreath.
I don't know who she was,
but mornings now I picture her amid
the sounding off of clocks and coffee pots
winding to work through packed streets
I have seen only on television
and in magazines,
and I pretend
she had a lover
who waited for her evenings when she came
late and tired from days
wanting only in the dark hours
the warmth of someone else;
I think of him
still wondering what sounds the buildings made
when they came down
and whether it was only silence
the sound she made
in the moments before some final ecstasy took over
and she flew
all legs and arms and hair,
her shouts like making love
like one last liberation from the weight.
