Knickerbocker Glories
In narrow streets and close to cobbled squares,
surrounded by ancient walls, a secret rendezvous is planned.
Close to the banks of the city river, our special romantic place.
Named simply:
The Blue Bird Café. More intimate than a Greek Taverna,
or a medieval castle, in a Mills and Boon.
Serenaded by a charismatic husker in a pedestrianised
street bustling with tourists. We sit in our quaint
surroundings, on a perfect August day.
We pretend to study the menu but the choice
is already made. Two Knickerbocker Glories,
delicious and wicked. Just like the first time we
shared the same table,
as strangers relaxing in April showers. You talked
about peregrine falcons, Basil in Fawlty Towers, yearning for
fish
and chips while in Florence and coming home to a broken
romance. The Blue Bird Café,
is sunshine after rain. Panoramic views on a cheap
return ticket. No flying involved or choppy seas.
We return year after year, mix the seasons and
explore different topics of coversation.
In summer we wear jeans and brightly coloured
T-shirts. In the mellow autumn days add a jumper and carry an
umbrella. Winter we shiver wrapped in layers of Shetland Wool.
Without hesitation we order the same,
two Knickerbocker Glories.
