Substance and Shadow
Sometimes high-velocity corridors host your life; glazed, maybe, like the services one straddling the M4 near Reading. You an eternal contraflow. Or maybe the view’s too open; here at the water’s edge miles of sand, monotones (I’m calling you, calling you still); headlands swallowed into cloud, individuality gone (Baggy with its lichened blue whale jawbone, Morte for August’s parasol mushrooms, Bull’s lighthouse slicing the night into manageable doses). But the tide’s out and the sea doesn’t frill or roar or fawn at your feet like a greyhound, but slops lazily, undramatically, in couldn’t-care-less sandy puddles; and somewhere else...
