Film stars of the golden age
They were as handsome as we hoped to be,
with sculptured hair and flawless teeth.
Their charismatic smiles lingered
like slowly dissolving dreams
on the long walk home through the dark.
We couldn’t imagine how stars lived
beyond the landscape of their films.
They were mysterious, born to be idle,
sophisticates whose luxurious skins
were warmed by perpetual sun.
We watched and worshipped,
walked hand in hand down smoky, city streets
with laughing girls who tried to look
like Doris Day, dreaming of Hollywood,
where the stars never set.
