Edge
From the summit, wrought stairs lift us
to the orientation table. We have travelled from its rim
to meet here, breathless
at the centre of the visible world.
Squinting into the mist, I indicate, roughly, London;
you shade your eyes and point towards Rabat.
It is the summer of dog days.
Nothing today is clear; the exceptional heat
has thickened every horizon. As hard to see into the past
as into the future.
Bridging the unbridgeable gaps
I say, Isn’t that the sea? –
No no, you say. But look, I insist, running a hand
round the indented bronze periphery
and you follow my finger with your own,
tracing the double purfling to the south
as it comes and goes,
as promontories hide it briefly
and now and then something like a lighthouse
rises out of nothing, signalling.
