Small Parts of my Family's Body
What you remember about her is her toes. Her husband had to
cut small holes in her house shoes, always pink or red. Her
toes were yellow, the colour of skin which has lived without
sun unbreathing under leather (kiss it better) or in a cast.
They are bent in a way you never imagined the human body
could manage. More beautiful than lotus crushed with a
stone, the nail looks like a stone, trying to take over the
rest of her feet. To you this seems like the curse of a
fairytale, but she doesn’t believe in fairytales and merely
says ‘Shoes in my day’ and (slow flowering) words like
winklepickers and bunyons. You love her and you steal her
shoes every time you visit, wearing them around the house,
where your feet don’t touch the sides.
