Frost
Very early morning, there’s a frost in the garden
like something the moon has left behind.
If I nearly close my eyes it could be snow
covering the hedges with its white rind.
Air hangs from the shed in strips.
The apple tree is rounded, stuffed with dawn.
In the border weeds with ruffs of ice
hurl around the edges of the lawn.
And the fence has been remade with yellow paper
keeping in the frozen grass mid-run.
If I were Winter, surveying my little plot,
I would think the fun had only just begun.
