Flight
How fast he walks towards the cliff
to stand between flight and depth
caressing the elements, after a night
of panic, and on a day of doubt.
Below the waters twitch with chaos
slapping rocks and smoothing pebbles.
The cliff face does not moderate
nor the path yield much to time.
He might listen until the sound
of the water grows. He might draw
nearer the edge until the sounds
become more distinct.
He thinks of where the ideal opens
into the sheer drop of its knowing,
the chips of its intelligence falling
into the pit of its flow.
He cannot commit. He cannot set
his sights beyond nights of drunkenness
and the tilting mind, slipping
completely into the sea.
A white enchantment, an augury,
seeks an end, a shape to its flight,
snags, catches hold, begins
to form a vision.
