The Listener
For you who are listening.
The locked cupboard in the wall.
The dust behind the wireless
on the floor where you sit,
amassing its silence. Valve glow.
Cursor streaming through light
of all those far away places. Names,
names, enveloped in static, words
across dark spaces. Outside
the snow falling, in the empty garden.
The gate squealing on its hinges.
It is you. Through all the years
drifting, you come back to greet me.
This small echo I hold in the ear
of the world, cupped intransigence,
the voice of a child, talking to itself
in a room of shadows; valve
glow, the warmth of materials - wood,
glass, metal - a transcending
odour, drawing me near
to that conversation that does not end,
to that dark flower, that glass of
imperishable water, from which I drink.
