Peacock House
The peacock house by the moorgate
weeps from lowered eaves
as mist drizzles out the view.
Slant pseud-Tudor timbers
spell the Twenties. Good days
with holidays for rounders families,
when plimsolls’ whited sepulchres
sat out dry nights on windowsills
dreaming of candlelit charades,
or Murder to giggled accompaniment.
Old days. Now the debonair daughter
sits in the folds of her face.
They curtain her profile. Her eyes,
bone nose and fingernails sense
the grip of the brooding moor,
its ancient ageless stories,
balms and blizzards. She knows them.
Inside, her books rot as mice celebrate
while a peacock patrols her roof
as she sits between heaven and earth,
crone at the century’s end.
