Easing the Gravity Field by Christopher Southgate
ISBN 1 904886 29 9
This collection is subtitled ‘poems of science and love’, but these are far from mutually exclusive categories for Southgate. The blurring and juggling of scientific and poetic truths is introduced in the opening poem ‘Falling Bodies’, where Venus is experienced simultaneously as ‘glowing, lovely as a warm-throated pearl’ and ‘a boiling ocean of corrosion’. He writes of love, loss, and faith with a scientist’s precision, and of astronomy, physics and biology with reverence and passion. The result is a quietly accomplished collection scattered with small moments of revelation.
