Out of the Pits
Carl used to like speed –
going real fast around
ovals, one familiar turn
following another, gliding
on slick asphalt
in his #9 midnight black
Dodge as the smell of rubber
burning penetrated
his helmet while he focused
on a spot just ahead of
him, always turning left
with nothing to slow him
down, no check to his speed – until
he went empty
in the Fireball Royale, last
July, out front too, for a second, then
fell back, coasted
to the pits and as other cars
raged round heard in the screams
regret about going
in circles just a half mile
round, no matter how many
times, no matter how
many tires the track was fed
and he knew he would go
straight, maybe even be still.
