Today's Allotments
Now we have coriander seasons,
when knuckles of garlic
precede fringed brassicas,
when women in saris
trundle wheelbarrows,
turbans nod above the greens,
and two people may say hello.
Before were seasons of winters
for these plot seekers, when
the waiting list meant just that.
For Len, allotment secretary,
kept nothing that wasn’t English,
except the pride in his tomatoes
and early greenhouse grapes.
Today a metal Horlicks sign
shares the plot with irritations onions;
today coriander, garlic, fringed brassicas
are seasoned with today’s varieties of people
