The Photograph
Closing the door marked danger
her face framed in darkness
above her the soaring chimney already awry brick
crumbling green-stained by the lightning conductor
paint peeling off
By the tumble of trolleys her white coat
glimpsed in the kiln where the brick-piles moulder
her smile passing over the litter
of glass and cast-iron on the engine-house floor
machines smooth metal greased still
and clatter of ladders climbing to where from the loader
the clay poured down where the cog-wheels
shuddered still now
On the hillside leaning out
into the air where her image is stamped on these ruins
decaying some small pieces fallen dislodged
since last month
her glance upon them still drifting
as the woods and wildflowers shake themselves free of
their dream where the swifts once more
dip to the lake and are gone
