The Autoerotic Dream of Motorcycles
All my dreams are machine dreams.
I know why the vines do not destroy
the bricks they twine against
on the house next door.
What species of thought this?
Something about a kickstand,
helmets, the hair matted
and curlicue-damp on my cheek.
I wasn’t banking on this.
What would the soundtrack be?
I know a man who rides his bike
downtown late at night,
strange cyclops.
I have signed the organ donor card.
What supplies the viscera with sense?
Sweet sympathetic nervous system.
How my heart races, sleek, streamlined.
All the men I know ride motorcycles.
Perhaps that is why
I think of taking to the road,
a creased leather saddle, an engine
sounding my arrivals and departures.
I’d be hell on wheels, begoggled, tattooed.
Cruise out on the curve
of nightfall, quit my day job.
