The Father of Danish Astronomy
Tycho Brahe had a golden nose,
which sounds as nice as nasty
things can get. Sixteenth-century rhinoplasty
was brave yet crude. He sat
at night star-gazing, where no one could see
his noble deformity:
an amber proboscis
that was worth
its weight, and yet he’d gladly give the earth
to repossess the heavenly body of
a natural protuberance. Thus fate
kept him up late
and, while the world worked,
took him to his bed
on whose pillow one astounding head
would sleep the day away, dreaming
of planetary motions beyond number,
the choreography of gilded slumber.
