Eastern Seaboard- September Morning
September 11, 2001
Afternoon
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
The sunshine of late summer warms the air,
and fall’s first fringe of yellow decks the leaves.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
Harvesters are cutting swathes in corn,
and apple trees are flush with ripened fruit.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
Airhorns echo through the hills and hollows,
and signal bells in sleepy hamlets sound.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
Touch-me-nots all pendulous with nectar
beckon hummingbirds and bumblebees.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
In mountain streams, speckled trout are leaping.
Seagulls skim the white-capped crests of waves.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
Sparrows feed on berries, robins flutter,
doves coo, ducks rise, and falcons hover.
Above the banking swallows, herons soar.
And far above the Blue Ridge, birds of prey
ascend, spiraling into the sun,
once more embarking on their ancient trek
with immemorial intent.
The sky is clear and bright and blue today.
A breeze is blowing softly from the west.
