The Laugh
Head thrown back, eyes closed,
it's the guffaw, the attractive-
repulsive gesture; the jester
with cap and bells savouring
his own joke; the laughing
Cavalier driver, another hedgehog
to his credit; the nun with
a dropped ice cream;
the sadist re-aiming his boot;
Christ in that New Age American
painting baring hyena teeth;
my great-aunt nodding off
in her armchair, dentures
exposed alarmingly; that Mexican
corpse we saw, preserved
upright in a display cabinet,
enjoying a real side-splitter.
