ABC
Mururoa is shaped like the letter C;
just forty kilometres, necklaced
by shark’s teeth.
C is for catastrophe or cancer or cat.
These cats do not pad,
as ours do, delicately and uncontaminated.
Stumbling, they cannot see,
as ours do, flash of wing, flick of fin.
Some mad corporal
patrols the atoll
and shoots them all.
Theirs is a kind killing, a route à nulle part.
In Zone Chaude the geiger counters click
like death-watch beetles and we open tins
of cat food, choosing Duck and Heart.
