Midsummer
With the swift increase in water flow
of an electric shower, rain intensifies,
fizzing, dripping on foliage,
on drumskins of terracotta pots.
It is a midsummer storm
as dark as the thunder’s throat,
deafening drum rolls
startling the nerves’ aviary
of full-throated parakeets.
Lightning blinds unwary daylight,
flashing suddenly on conscience,
shocking momentary belief in God’s wrath.
Under a midsummer-grey sky
greenness intensifies, the sense
everywhere of thirsts being slaked,
promising fast new growth in sunlight.
