Winter Tourists
I grin beside the gates to Rydal Mount
(closed for the winter) waiting for the flash
and driving off we heard the body count
was rising hourly from the German crash:
three Britons dead among a random crowd
from different nations on a single train.
The heartless silver of the lake still prowled
beside our dawdling car; we stopped again
to take the ferry over Ullswater.
Free from the news, beyond our radio,
we hugged, not from romance but from the cold,
the mountains folding round us and the air
charged with the promise of an early snow;
we held each other tight and kept our hold.
