Parknasilla
We drove the broad day down from Dublin
south between successive saturated hills,
took tea slow-coaxed from smouldering peat,
found Parknasilla’s three hundred pampered acres.
Late fifteen, the furies at last abating,
I squatted on the rocks opposite, looked back
to the grass jetty that jutted square into an inlet
of braked and bent and shunted brown Atlantic,
watched lush sub-tropical lazy evening light
tumble down the shone-shoulders of radiating
children laughing, leaping right-to-left diagonals,
knees-hugged, to Gulf Stream green abundant futures.
They’re all still there, hidden in the maze garden,
behind doors held always open, waiting
under languorous seaweed, lolling in the coils
that make seriousness impossible to take.
