Dromedary
The camel in the back
pokes its head
periscopically
above the cabin,
surveys the flatlands
like a conqueror,
otherwise pouts
boredom in the rear,
squats imperturbable
as Buddha, bats
lashes at cars.
Her eyes bulge like
a Disney cartoon’s.
The driver stops,
and in the mirror,
as I slow to watch,
the hobble round
her knees is loosed.
She jack-knifes,
scissors, cranes
to troubled height,
swivels and shakes dust
from her dark hide.
Her owner tilts his
simple headcloth,
climbs the steep shank
rising to the neck.
She concertinas
crumbling earth,
lilts each side
as she moves off
with a slow flirt’s gait
by a swimming pool,
model mincing
wide, dry steppe.
