Soon she will be joining my dead
My aunts, variously gracious
and flustered, will welcome her with tea.
My uncles will discuss her,
'A damned attractive woman, intelligent too'.
My mother will keep her at arm's length
until she has placed her socially.
My grandmother will allow her
to accompany her to flea-markets.
My sister-in-law will dislike her
but they will talk about gardens for an eternity.
My first love will tell her
how he came to die so young.
My father will ask her to tell him all about me.
