Cellist
He opens the tall case, props it by the wall,
its twin halves like poppy sepals,
the red silk showing inside.
He wheedles the cello into place,
spins it on its spiked heel like a top,
pours himself around its body.
Like a long finger his bow comes
searching, choosing over the strings.
And it begins:
dark river hum of sound, and I
am driftwood swept away on water
and he is honey, oil, butter,
oozing round the cello's curves,
a lover curled round his woman.
And, like the woman,
I want him never to stop.
