High Voltage Above
I like the track that threads its patch of green
by the electricity sub-station. You skirt
behind the backs of houses and spindly fences:
borders of nettles and ferns; specks of broken glass
like mica. The path looks the kind of short-cut
that by its end may prove to be circuitous.
Half-way through you’ll find the sub-station – humming;
tall-dock-leaved islanded; bricks dribbling dry mortar.
Yet the sign nailed to its door always looks brand new
or freshly tended – on startling yellow displaying
a black stick-figure, head thrown back in free fall,
the zigzagged shaft about to spear its linear breast.
