Boxing with Shadows
Tonight, the Queen of the Night sings
Her wild staccato aria at full blast while I fling
My arms at gargoyles that wink and leer:
Edward Scissorhands has arrived with queer
Pincer insect hands. He can slice you in two
Meaning to caress. The room is scarcely blue
Lit by the cool blue winter moon and still I whirl,
Boxing with shadows, feeling myself uncurl
From where I hid, under the covers,
Where it isn’t safe after all; even lovers
Are really on their own and must face alone
The hammering of that top F on frail bone
And skin that dries to dust. There’s no one here
But the Queen of the Night, singing a clear
Top F (is for Fear). I have perfect pitch, a perfect ear.
