The Battering
That time, his transgression
was sneaking a snack from the cupboard.
I can’t remember what it was he took.
Compounded with that was the sin
of locking his bedroom door.
In my rage, I smashed it in,
exploding the jamb to splinters.
I believed in beatings then,
my belt the weapon of choice.
Welted, he sobbed himself to sleep.
Now I have the nerve to wonder every year
why he doesn’t send a card on Father’s Day.
I could call and ask forgiveness,
but that would rip the skin right off the scars.
