What I want to thank you for
is the cosy kitchen light, hot pipes underfoot
and potatoes bumping to the boil;
eating in easy and uninterrupted silence,
washing up to gossip, jokes, and above all
your arms freeing me from their hold;
outside the back door, open-mouthed,
gulping the cold heart-thumping air,
shaking stars out of the tablecloth.
