Students, African
Telling them that God was a construct
and that the real question was, why?
and the classroom glowing
with anger and pity
and me feeling alive.
Telling them about oppression
cloaked in evangelical mission
and early childhood sepias
of ringed female necks a foot long
and a savage with a bone through his nose.
And the one with the stars and stripes headtie
whose eyes had drowned my wine bar seduction
in deep indifference two nights ago
now telling us the bone
was a fashion statement
and suddenly leaving the room,
with me knowing
that on her mobile
it says, I love Jesus
and Jesus loves me.
