Bonfires
Come back in bonfires
at the turn of the year
when the sky is dark blue,
the houses sealed up
against the cold.
Come back in that flare
of piled on warm,
a forgotten red
which rushes right in
at the heart.
We are one in a ring.
We are watchful eyes
and extended hands.
We are stood cut out
against the night.
You are piled high
burning in this moment,
a practical heaping
of leaves and lives.
Come back in bonfires
at the turn of the year.
