Spiders
Fred sees them spinning in the air with silent thread.
He likes their cotton legs, the way they stare him out,
the fragile nets they hang from box to chair. Fred says
Look, there’s one but the other children, herding sheep,
cup careful hands round three-legged lambs, fenced in
with chewed green plastic. No-one else hears the crunch
when the fly arrives. Fred draws the latest, green and fat.
Fifteen legs, one head, toes, eyebrows, teeth. The teacher
takes his crayon away and lines him up for lunch.
