Don’t be too rough on my cold, cold heart
It’s all I’ve got left to me nowi.m. Kirsty MacColl
There should be little need for me to announce the theme of this issue. It stands out on almost every page - childhood, family, parent/child most of all. I refuse to apologise for the degree and amount of pain this theme brings with it, but you will find a leavening of humour if you search for it. What has surprised me is the huge volume of strong work centred round this subject. I recently read of one poetry magazine editor who automatically rejected any poem on the theme of childhood, and I shudder to contemplate what excellent work must thereby get discarded. My problem has been too much work which I could not possibly leave out.
FIRE now has a website - www.poetical.org - which will include selected poems from the current issue, regularly changed. Links to other websites are planned in the future. If you’re online or have access to the net, do please visit the website.
Please however continue to use snailmail for most correspondence, particularly to send me submissions or other information. And please continue to enclose a sae - the advent of new technology seems to have led some writers to think this is no longer necessary. IT IS.
