The Crack In The Ceiling
The man who finally,
painstakingly, methodically
fixed my bedroom ceiling
is in prison.
I don’t know where to write
to get the crack put back.
The lie of it is still visible,
though repaired,
unlike his daughters.
Because they have girls of their own
because they saw his face,
and remembered the smell of fear,
the police were told.
The rain used to drip, drip, drip
into bowls around the room.
You are never too old.
Sometimes in the moonlight
I see the line above me
and I think of Eric Gill.
The solemn still beauty
of his stations of the cross
in Westminster.
How his carving hands
were those that hushed
his daughter’s mouths.
