Federico García Lorca (June 1898 - August 1936)
As a young poet, he took up residence in Granada.
Granada, irresistible magnet of Flamenco and bullfighting.
It was seven at night.
They told you, Federico, that your sister's husband had been killed.
In the bullring, the bullfight is nearly over.
The ladies hide their faces behind exquisite fans,
their view of the "torero guapo" is not apparent to those nearby.
Sharp, gleaming silver. Strong fingers grasp the gold handle.
At each kill they shout "Olé".
And García Lorca was taken away.
It was seven at night.
From shielding curtains, his close friends, helpless, watched him,
being marched off by the Franquistas,
into the grey night.
No flamenco,
no olés,
no sign of his white
Just a rapid volley,
of bullets.
A las siete de la noche.
