Lizard in Glen Rosa
She sits there stroked by kindly heat
to perfect quiescence, while her sun-bathed stone
is offering a plinth for her to pose on
in all her handsomeness, each of her three
back ridges picked out in delicate ochre
against her olive skin, small limbs
tucked out of sight
a few yards from the burn's brown tumble
down a cleft in the grass and green bracken that springs
up the early slopes of the hill we've laboured
to climb and descend. We do not bother her
sitting there in companionable
absence of movement.
When we rise and shake the idleness
out of our harried muscles, she too
jumps up and away, zipping over her stone
into her curtained, peat-hollow den.
