Today as so often before
that telltale shiver ran down my neck
the small hairs stood on end
like a field waiting to be dug for turves
and I thought “I must be closer now”.
Later I heard that strange ah honk of wilderness
saw geese fly north through trails of red and amber light.
One lingered at the edge of the sea
lifting each black otherworldly foot in turn
as she waited for her mate to come back.
Floating cobwebs reached in from quiet air to brush my face.
Absorbed in herself the goose stretched out one wing
and then the other separating the quills
like a conductor spreading his fingers
until the orchestra plays as one.
Through the seafret of my mind I heard a click
like a hunter breaking his gun for the night.
