Dai Penmawr's Teeth
There’s my smallholding he said,
stitched to the nude hill by wandering stones;
sheep specked like the finest fruit of snow,
a brave hard place to be born and bred.
Then he laughed a laugh
that raised the sun;
astonished us all with his bare pink gums,
and like Mujahadin hid his mouth in a grimy scarf.
S’truth Dai, where’s your teeth today?
Diawl boys bach it’s Friday,
as though this went the whole way
to explain that Elwen wears them to Tregaron, mind you just on market
day.
When I went back I heard that Dai was dead;
I suppose Elwen wears them now, as a memory of all her husband said.
