Aaah
Girls let out of their cages at the wrong time of day
chatter and flock while the police nuzzle their mobile phones,
bark warnings, herd them away, snapping at stragglers.
Their gestures are brutal, their faces stiff with power.
The girls ruffle their feathers and squawk, resentful.
Look up at the concrete cladding, the plate-glass windows
and imagine the tearing, the ripping, the shaking the falling
and then the dust. Admit a shamed longing
for an explosion that would break up that heavy sky
with a brilliance of dying stars, bring it all down
in burning fragments, decorating the streets with great
golden garlands of fire-flowers and falling petals
and to hear from the girls that spontaneous cry for
when it is finished and the earth has moved under them.
