The Bluff
As the daily bus climbed up
the coil of rope mountain,
to service hide and seek villages,
it was boarded by
two who sought assistance
in Albanian inflected Greek,
eyes searching, asking here? there?
counting down possibilities,
at the front near the driver,
while their baby slept
the bus passed secreted settlements,
invisible from the window,
passed the here-you’ve-arrived, bus stop,
to stops somewhere more remote
even for explorations of goats.
solicitous, the conductor waved goodbye,
while the baby slept,
left the three at mid day in midsummer,
midway to nowhere;
in the bond of chicanery,
driver and mate chuckled.
