Mornings, he weeps because he loves them:
arch of aorta, cerebral cortex,
heart, lung, mammary glands...
He sends them floating in glass jars
and sits for hours to record
the intricacies of spleen and tongue.
Afternoons he spends drawing
a portfolio of flesh and bones
where his tears leave saline prints
on each turned page,
He knows he must master it all,
Abdominal to Zygote, before the end of day,
when all he’ll do is look so hard
his cytoplasm will set like jelly
and his eyes dry out.
poetrymagazines' note: recorded at Southbank Centre on 9th December 2006.
