Cormorant
He looks left over from some olden time,
this 'raven of the sea'. Perched all morning
on the same bough,
just above the water
where the ducks go round.
Even in his stillness
there's an awkwardness - something ill-fitting
in the suit of himself.
He shocks you with beak-barb, weed-green eye -
a scaley tracery showing through the plumage
you were sure was black . . .
With wings outstretched
he's a miniature dragon pondering take-off - familiar
of marsh stump and swirling stack
among rowing boats and swans.
When he finally dives, your mind wanders -
darting all ways
on the end of a string.
